Preoperative anxiety is a common psychological response among surgical patients, often linked to fear of the surgery itself, potential complications, and postoperative recovery (Musa et al., 2024). This anxiety can have significant negative effects on both the patient's mental and physical well-being, influencing their overall surgical outcomes. Nurses, particularly in the perioperative setting, play a crucial role in mitigating preoperative anxiety through communication, education, and emotional support (Omar et al., 2023). In Bauchi State, a region that faces various healthcare challenges, there is an increasing need to understand the impact of nurses' interventions in addressing preoperative anxiety and improving patient experiences.
Nurses are well-positioned to identify and address the psychological needs of surgical patients. Their involvement in preoperative education, providing reassurance, and fostering trust in the surgical process has been shown to reduce anxiety levels significantly (Adeoye et al., 2023). In Bauchi State, where healthcare resources are often limited, understanding the role of nurses in reducing preoperative anxiety is essential for enhancing patient care and ensuring optimal surgical outcomes. This study seeks to explore how nurses’ actions in preoperative care influence anxiety levels in surgical patients, providing insights into effective strategies that can be implemented to improve the patient experience before surgery.
Preoperative anxiety is a widespread issue among surgical patients in Bauchi State, potentially affecting recovery and surgical outcomes. While nurses are recognized as key players in patient care, their specific role in alleviating preoperative anxiety remains underexplored in this context. This study aims to examine how nurses can reduce preoperative anxiety in surgical patients and evaluate the effectiveness of their interventions.
This study will focus on surgical patients in Bauchi State hospitals and examine the role of nurses in managing preoperative anxiety. The limitations of the study may include the challenge of measuring anxiety accurately and the potential for patient self-reporting bias.
